Rocky Mountain Open 2023

Over this past weekend I attended the Rocky Mountain Open. It was a 2 day event with a top 8 and redemption bracket split on Sunday. There was also 40K and AOS represented, but only Legion sold out. Woot! For this one, I doubted I would be considered for painting and I haven't been able to get any games in lately. Basically my goal was to play six games. To which I was fairly successful. Winning? Well, you will have to read on...

Wait, what? Legion Edition

Not my anything, but fun stuff all over.

So, I recently played in another Star Wars Legion tournament. This one way South at Inconceivable Games in Castle Rock. Again, my son was the driving force for this one. It was a bit of a drive and I had to pick him up, so that was farther out of my way. Plus, I was running a D&D session the next day and was trying to get things printed the night before the tournament. I failed to get it all done, but it didn't matter, because my group didn't go that way anyway. Cause that is how it works. Anyway, needless to say I was tired for this one. My goal was to get Dylan there and hoped he had fun. I had zero personal goals. Not even "win a game." But I did alright.

Well, let's get into it.

Double Down on Double Fun

So, I may have said "later this week," but at least I'm only one day late.

With Dylan and I both not making top 8(shocker), he was planning to enter the double tournament on Sunday. I was hoping to con it up, since I hadn't been in years, and I knew that focusing on a single game all weekend isn't always that great. My plan was to step into to run a GM wanted "Teach Me Malifaux" event. But, being me, I also offered to fill in if they needed a teammate.

Dumb ....

At first, it was looking like I was good to go, and I even told the con peoples it was looking that way. But, when I got back to the game room, somebody else had shown up, playing Clones. So, he would play with Dylan, and Byron(sorry if I spelled it wrong) and I would team up in a mismatch CIS and Shadow Collective team.

Off to the races.

New game, so let's play in a tournament!

I recently picked up Star Wars Legion, at the urging of my son. He had played it at a miniature night at the Nerd Store in Greeley, while I played my league X-Wing game. He was also in the league, but had a bye. Afterwards, he was hooked, and we searched around looking for more Clone Troopers for him to add to his force. I had picked up a box of Imperial Storm Troopers long ago, when we were trying to play the Edge of the Empire rpg, so I tried a game with them. It seemed good, but I had no interest in Empire. However, the Shadow Collective has been recently released, so I grabbed a starter. And then another. Managed to play 4 or 5 games, one of them even at the standard 800 points. So, what was the obvious next step? A tournament at Tacticon, of course.

Infinity: Need for Speed

I have recently been playing a lot of Infinity. It has definitely become my main. I spend every other Thursday night drive to and from Westminster just to get a game. I have not been great about pictures, though. I do have a couple back burnered reports that just need pictures added, though. We will see if they make it past draft.

This game, however, was not in Westminster, but actually Greeley. I had met a guy I used to play with there to reteach him the game, and one of the employees suggested I join them on Sundays. Which, of course, is the worst day for me. However, I was able to drag Dylan along on Halloween and get a game. He played somebody else, I actually ended up playing that very same employee.

He, Tom, took Steel Phalanx, and I took... wait for it... Aleph. Originally, I wrote this up for Loss of Lieutenant's Need for Speed contest, but I took Penthesilea because I painted her, she looks awesome, and I REALLY want to make her work. I may be getting there.

Been a while

So, yeah, it has been a bit. With the whole pandemic thing I hadn't been getting in very many games. And I wasn't really posting before that. I hope to change that, as much as because I need the outlet to write aas much as to break down my games for my own cognitive.

Rematch!

I snagged a rematch today. Or near enough. Dane and I played again and the strategy was Plant Explosives. For schemes we flipped Hold Up Their Forces, Deliver a Message, Claim Jump, Outflank, and Take Prisoner. Three of which we had on Friday. The deployment was corners however, so that was a change. My list barely changed, his changed a lot.

Lightning win, slow draw

I have been playing around with doing video battle reports, which is why have posted them here. However, it has been a long road, and they may never come out.
Yesterday I played two game but forgot my camera, so I wanted to post them here. I also forgot my notebook, so I don't have all the details, either. But they were both interesting to me.
Both games were before the 3-22 update to M3E.

A Tidbit of M3E

As I mentioned in the last post, I have been getting in games of the Malifaux M3E closed beta. Up until recently, I have been under a NDA to keep quiet, but recently Wyrd lifted it, so I can now blabber all I want. My opponent through the beta was Dane. That was it. Try as we might, we couldn't get any other testers in our group to come get some. But a game is a game. And Dane is a great opponent to be saddled with. I'm not going to go into any rules details, those are elsewhere, about to be opened, and may have already changed. Anyway, on to the battle.

The battle for Konor

I managed to get in not one, but two games for the Fate of Konor global campaign over the weekend. All for the glory of Chaos, but not always using Chaos. Hmmmm..... I also did some X-Wing Mario Kart racing.

40K, now with missions

I did manage to get in a game this last weekend. The game was against Paul and Alex's Eldar and Space Marine forces. I was running my Night Lords list, but added a Predator with autocannon and heavy bolters, a unit of raptors, and, at the last minute, a unit of cultists. My list comes to 1885 without the cultists and 101 power level. The cultists were a last minute addition to make up a few power level. Ironically the cultists turned out to be clutch.

Many mini 8th ed battles

As many of you should know, 8th edition 40k came out last weekend. Since then I have been playing game after game. Exclusively at 19 power levels, my oldest wants to play his guard, which is a unit of Veterans and a Tank Commander. Needless to say, the wider scope may be missing. However, I have learned some things.

Knee Slider

Haven't been playing a lot lately, largely due to life. Other people's lives, actually, as I don't have a life of my own. However, I was able to get in a game of Guild Ball this past week, against a guy I haven't played since my Malifaux days. Honestly, I'm not sure I ever played him or he just played in my events. Either way, he agreed to give me a game. He used his Morticians, since Engineers are over powered, and they were painted a bit. I, of course, played Masons. I had picked up Chisel forever ago, because she is awesome, and I didn't think I was going to be able to get a scene going at HT, and I wanted her. I also, more recently, picked up the Kick Off starter. It is cheaper, and I just can't let dreams die, no matter how far fetched. Well, I originally wanted to join the group at Rogue's Roost on days when the KoGT group flakes(there are only two left besides me). However, after trying to get a game in there, I found those guys to be obscenely unpleasant. Dreams are for loser anyway. But I can't let mine go, so, having a free week night, I put the Facebook call out. And low and behold, Haunted has a Wednesday night Guild Ball night. It isn't super active, but I only needed one player, and blammo, a game.

I played games!

So, after a couple weekends out of town and life and such things, I was able to get in not one, but two games of X-Wing over the past weekend. I ran basically the same list. I played Paul both times, and I managed some wins on top.

False start and a face plant

As I have mentioned, GW has a Blood Bowl League going on. So far, my LGS can't get the info to put in games, but I am still playing. When I get some games posted, I will tag my league site on here. Anyway, the Saturday before last I started a game versus Paul's Orc Island Raiders. We only managed to get in two turns before I had to run grab my kids. When I returned, one of them threw up, so that was that game. We did meet up on Thursday for a game, and I will get into that after the break. I also ran a X-Wing tournament last Saturday. Well, "ran" is probably the wrong word. It was more of get off work early, race over, set up tables, wait for a while, clean up tables, go home. Yep, nobody showed. It was super exciting.
Well, anyway, onto the game that was exciting.

A Weekend of Space and Field

Well, I didn't end up going to Colorado Winter Invasion 2017. Partly I was sick, partly they had even numbers, and partly I just wussed. I was not idle, however. Instead, after sleep in quite late, I headed to Hobby Town and played Paul three games of X-Wing. Then, after more sleep, I ran a build your Blood Bowl team event at Hobby Town on Sunday.

Gaming Update

Just wanted to drop a quick line about my gaming. It is still happening, honest. Yesterday, I head down, planning to play some AoS(yep, still a thing), but a father and son showed up, looking to play in a tournament. That was last week. As I was the only one there, I volunteered to play a game. I suggested a three way, but the father wanted one on one. So, I set up my Punishing One, Hawk, M3-A list. Its not, but it is fun to play. I am getting a bit bored with it, but it was ready to go. He was running Poe, the Ghost, and the transport. His list is very likely better than mine. I also forgot half of the things I had changed about the list however many weeks earlier. I did damage, but he did more. The Hawk went first, the Manaroo, but then, i trying to R2-D2 Poe's shields back, he allowed my Interceptor to tag behind, until he made a mistake, which meant Poe left the table. It also put me in line to finish the Ghost, but not before he dropped the Phantom. Unfortunately, i that fight, the M3-A with Mangler is just better, and was lined up better. We began to joust, he decided it was a bad idea, and tried to run. I just followed behind and finished it.

Shea had shown up and played the father. I don't know how that went, but I think he wanted to try his hand at my "awesome" flying ability. He was running a TIE swarm of like 5 or 6 plus Howlrunner. Before we even started, I knew I wasn't going to win without some super luck. I don't have the shots to take out a swarm. I do have the experience to level things, though. First up, Howlrunner. Easy peezy. Next, its just who can kill the most first. If I lose ships, I lose firepower. If he loses ships, he still has firepower. As it was, I lost faster. In the end, he won.

After that I played Shea in AoS, but it was weeks ago, I don't remember the specifics. I think the Necrosphinx happened and I won. 'nuff said.

Okay, probably dead

I am coming out of retirement, or at least hoping to. As anyone can see it has been far to long since I last posted. I have not been idle, but hobby progress has been nill. The big game around campus is X-Wing. After owning it for almost two years, all of a sudden, everyone has it and everyone is playing. I have become a Scum and Villainy player as of late, forsaking the Empire and piss poor pilot skill for expensive tricky pilots, drugs, and money.

However, thats not what I plan to discuss today. Instead I am going to go into depth on a Malifaux tournament I rolled into a couple weeks ago. It was ran by Russ out of the Nerd Store in Greeley. I had been trying to get over there for a while, but with work stupidity, I never had enough lead time to get it off. But, I finally did. Read on to find out how I did.

Not quite dead

So, it has been a little while since I last posted. Partly due to distraction, partly due to my video card dieing. I managed to get in a few games in the interim, all of which were 40K. I played Shea's Tau, Collin's Dark Angels, and jerked my way through part of a game versus Space Wolves. I won't discuss the last, I was tired, I was hungry, I was grumpy, and I screwed the pooch early. I finally called it on turn 3, after I realized my DPs should have been dead much earlier. I challenged a rematch at a time when I was a decent opponent.

Just the 40K

It has been a couple weeks, but I have not been idle. I have finally gotten some basing on my Night Lords, and I brought them out for a couple games. Two weeks ago I faced Shea's Orks and last week I faced Nabors's brand new Space Marines.
